Collaborative Learning Days: Records and Information Management

June 23 & 24, 2022

Opening Keynote

Communities and organizations need to look at Records and Information Management (RIM) not as a single project, but instead, as a series of interconnected projects leading to a final goal. Panelists will share their insights on why investing in RIM is important and how to start a RIM project: by completing a self-assessment, understanding what is already in place, and identifying needs and a workplan to move forward.

Panel Discussion: RIM Stories from the Ground

Hear from, and ask questions to, First Nation community practitioners and federal public servants as they speak about Records and Information Management: best – or better – practices, challenges faced in implementing RIM programs and policies, how bigger is not always better and what you need to consider to make your operations run smoothly.

Small Discussion Breakouts

Participants will break into small groups and be paired with a RIM facilitator to provide a space to ask questions in a more intimate setting.

Breakout Session 1: RIM 101

Building off the opening keynote the presenters will do a deeper dive into RIM 101: what are the guiding principles behind building a strong RIM program, what are the key issues you need to consider around filing systems and electronic records, what should you know about privacy and security?

Breakout Session 2: Your First RIM Project

RIM experts suggest targeting one RIM project as a starting point, and an excellent example is focusing on how to manage minutes and records of decision from executive meetings and Chief and Council meetings. Presenters will talk about: what systems they have in place, what they have learned to date, and if they had to, what would they do differently moving forward.

Breakout Session 3: On-line file sharing systems: What the Heck Do We Use!

Now that we are 2 ½ years into the Covid-19 pandemic the names Dropbox, SharePoint, Google Docs, and OneDrive are probably now on your radar.  Is your community or organization struggling with the decision of which one to use? These presenters will talk about what you should consider when selecting a RIM solution.

Closing Plenary

Join us for the closing plenary panel to hear about ‘what’s next’?  Where can your community or organization go to for additional support and training?  How can you secure buy-in from leadership?  What do you need to do to manage change in the RIM context?
