First Nations Data Governance Strategy (FNDGS) Summer Webinar Series

BC First Nations Governments have called for and are now preparing for the implementation of a national First Nations Data Governance Strategy (FNDGS), which includes the formation of a Data Centre to serve BC First Nations Governments. This summer webinar series is being held to begin assisting BC First Nations Governments in building capacity in data governance and information management. Data governance and information management experts will present and share resources during these interactive sessions.

Indigenous Data Sovereignty and DRIPA: Asserting Data and Intellectual Property Ownership – Wednesday, August 4, 2021, 10:30am-12:00pm

The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) acknowledges that Indigenous peoples have rights related to intellectual property and identity. This session will provide participants with practical examples of how First Nations Governments can assert ownership over their Nation’s intellectual property (i.e. language, stories, songs, practices, etc.) and identity.

Data Governance: Government to Government Data Quality and Sharing Agreements – Tuesday, August 17, 2021, 1:00-2:30pm

BC has a great diversity of First Nations cultures with 34 living languages and many dialects associated with the Indigenous Nations that hold rights in BC. During this session, participants will explore the concept of Quality Data from various First Nations worldviews, and they will review a preliminary draft of a First Nations Government developed Data Quality and Sharing Agreement template.

Data and Information Management: Policies and Procedures to Manage and Protect Data – Wednesday, September 1, 2021, 10:30am-12:00pm

First Nations Governments create and receive massive amounts of data in the form of documents, studies, and correspondence. To govern the management of these resources, policies and procedures need to be in place to manage resources and their creation, retention, storage, sharing, and analysis. During this session, a Data Governance Framework and Policy Manual for First Nations Governments will be shared with participants, as will a variety of other records and information management resources.

Deadline to apply: December 31, 2023, 11:59pm (PST).
The First Nations Well Being Fund has been developed and is being implemented by FNPSS in order to support First Nations in their efforts to promote well-being, increase quality of life for all community members and reduce poverty at the community and Nation level.
There are two streams of project funding available: Stream 1: Community Projects and Stream 2: Planning Projects.

We invite leadership, administrators, and senior managers from all BC First Nations, delegates from First Nations governance and service organizations, and government and other partners to join us for a thought-provoking two days that will explore how First Nations governance administrations are "Taking Root."

To support BC First Nations public service, FNPSS offers paid registration, travel, and accommodation for two delegates per BC First Nation.
