Dear Chiefs Council, sister organizations, and friends:

The UBCIC 54th Annual General Assembly (AGA) will take place September 27th – September 29th, 2022. The hybrid AGA will be at Musqueam Community Centre, xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Territory) with a virtual option via Zoom.  The meeting will follow all public health guidance regarding COVID-19. Please register here and reach out to ccregistration@ubcic.bc.ca if you would like assistance.  Attached, please find a proxy template letter if needed.

At the UBCIC AGA this year, there will be an election for UBCIC President. An official announcement and nomination forms are attached. In accordance with the UBCIC Bylaws and communicated in the 2nd notice, nominations for President are accepted from Wednesday, August 31, 2022, to Wednesday September 14th, 2022, 4:30 pm. Only those communities who are Full Members in good standing (have paid their membership dues for the current fiscal year) will be eligible to vote. Please contact Tracy Point (tpoint@ubcic.bc.ca or 604-831-4265) if you have not yet renewed your membership for the current fiscal.

INFORMATION TO ATTEND UBCIC 54TH ANNUAL GENERAL ASSEMBLY
Registration for In-Person and Virtual Attendance

Please PRE-REGISTER (https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0vduChrT0iHdGUTbwYsQitPiSlweKOGivw)

no later than 4:00 pm on September 25th, 2022, to receive your meeting link.

  • Everyone must pre-register for the UBCIC Annual General Assembly Zoom meeting.
    Registration helps staff track and support meeting delegates (Chiefs, proxies, representatives), speakers and observers. Pre-registration is also required to receive a unique Zoom meeting link.
  • Be sure to use an email address that you can access as needed. Only those who register in advance for the UBCIC Chiefs Council meeting will receive their unique Zoom meeting link via email.
  • An email will be sent with your confirmation email and again the day prior to the meeting. Please retain the email with the Zoom meeting link as it will be required to join the meeting.

Registration Confirmation:  Once you have submitted the online registration form, you will receive an email within 48 hours indicating that your registration has been confirmed.  The email will be sent from no-reply@zoom.us under the subject line “UBCIC 54th ANNUAL GENERAL ASSEMBLY Confirmation”.

If you have indicated upon your registration that your community is not currently in good standing
(membership dues owing), please contact Tracy Point (

Per the UBCIC Constitution and Bylaws, only members in good standing in the current fiscal year (April 1st, 2022, to March 31st, 2023) may speak from the floor or vote on resolutions brought forward during the meeting.

FNPSS was invited to attend the grand opening of Upper Similkameen Indian Band's, Chuchuwayha Community Hall. The event was attended by approximately 100 people from the First Nation and neighbouring communities, and included drumming, singing, the sharing of memories from community members, and words from the First Nations Elders.

Chuchuwayha Community Hall was originally built in 1905, serving as a gathering space for the local community. Unfortunately, the building required significant restoration and was not in use for almost 20 years, leaving the First Nation with no space to gather, celebrate, and offer their youth in community education. The hall long served as the centrepiece of community events, dances, and gatherings. Restoration of the community hall will allow Upper Similkameen Indian Band to run child and youth programs, including after-school care and summer camps, provide training and education on traditional practices, and host all community members in one gathering space.

FNPSS supported the restoration project through our First Nations Well Being Fund. This funding was used to construct an outdoor kitchen and to create a Community Well Being Plan. The kitchen will serve as a gathering place where members can learn about traditional food gathering, preparation, and preservation to build food sovereignty in Upper Similkameen. Alongside this kitchen, funding was used to plan programming for the rebuilt community hall – including care for children and youth, strengthening community ties, and building knowledge of Upper Similkameen’s culture. Additional funding was provided by the Government of Canada, Province of British Columbia, Indigenous Services Canada, Greyback Construction, P&E Lumber, Heritageworks, McGinn Engineering & Preservation, and T.L Timber.
